How Often Should You Get Your Car Serviced

April 21, 2022

Life has been slowly getting back to normal after the pandemic which means back to a hectic schedule. With all that we need to accomplish in our daily routines, car maintenance can end up taking a back seat. Getting your car a check-up is always important to prevent further damage and expensive repairs. Here are some tips to remember how often your car should be serviced.

Mile Intervals

A simple rule to follow when it comes to servicing your car is the 30-60-90 service interval. This means you would visit the mechanic for routine maintenance at 30,000 miles, 60,000 miles, and 90,000 miles. Following this schedule will help keep your vehicle in the best shape possible. During your 30,000-mile visit, it’s also important to have your car’s fluid changed. This includes brake, power steering, coolant, and transmission fluid.

Inbetween Service

If you’re in between mile visits, there’s another easy formula to follow for other services your car may need. This rule is the 3-6-9-12 service intervals. Certain things need to be checked at 3,000, 6,000, 9,000, and 12,000 miles. At 3,000 miles it’s a good idea to get your belts, battery, and cables looked at. Your 6,000-mile visit is all about transmission and windshield washer fluid. 9,000 miles is a good time to check your lights and power steering. Lastly, at 12,000 miles your coolant and tires will be serviced.

Oil Changes & Filters

Oil changes are a standard part of getting your car serviced. It’s best to see the mechanic every 5,000 to 10,000 miles for this service. Always remember to check your manufacturer’s recommendation since every vehicle has different requirements. Air and fuel filters should also be changed for your car to run properly. Every 15,000 miles air filters need changing especially if your car spends time in a more dusty and polluted area. Fuel filters need to be changed every 30,000 miles, an engine won’t be able to run if a fuel filter is clogged.
