How Often Does a Timing Belt Need to be Repaired

October 4, 2023

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the first things that come to mind are oil changes, rotating our tires, and maybe filling up our windshield wiper fluid. One vital thing you need to keep track of is your timing belt. It is so important to replace it in a timely manner! Dave’s Auto Repair is here to help you understand what exactly your timing belt does and how to know when it’s time for a new one.

First things first, you need to know what function your timing belt serves. When you look under the hood, find the object that looks like a belt with a set of teeth running along it. It’s possible that you’ll need to take apart your engine cover, so it’s always a good idea to let a skilled professional take a look if you’re concerned you need a new belt.  Your timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshaft of your vehicle turning at the correct rate. Without it, your vehicle cannot function properly. Timing belts are affected every time we drive, but heavy acceleration, frequent stopping and starting, and slamming on your breaks repeatedly will wear it down more than the average driver.

There are many warning signs to watch out for that indicate a damaged or worn-out timing belt. If you feel or hear your engine vibrating, it’s misfiring, you’re losing power, or your fuel economy has dropped significantly, it’s time for a replacement. You may also hear a clicking or squealing sound, which means your timing belt is missing too many teeth to work properly.  If you continue driving your vehicle with an old timing belt, you could cause irreparable damage to your car. Valves and rods could push through your engine cover and completely ruin your engine.

You shouldn’t wait until an issue presents itself before replacing your timing belt. On average, the belt will need to be replaced between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. Always check your vehicle’s owner’s manual, as older vehicles may require more frequent maintenance.
