Battery Charging System

August 9, 2021

Nobody likes the miserable feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when your vehicle fails to start. One of the worst things that can happen is a failure of your car’s battery charging system right before you need to go somewhere important.

Because that’s such a terrible experience, it’s critical to know about your car’s battery charging system so that you can get it fixed quickly whenever problems arise. The battery charging system is composed of four components:

  • Battery
  • Alternator
  • Wiring
  • Voltage Regulator (computer on older cars)

The alternator creates electric power, the battery is a reservoir for it, and the other big one to remember is the regulator (or computer), which acts as the “traffic cop” that regulates how energy goes from the alternator to the battery.

You may not need to know every jot and title of what happens under the hood, but you should at least pay attention to your dashboard lights. If you get a light that says “gen,” “bat,” or “alt,” then you probably have a bad battery, or the alternator has malfunctioned.

Of course, when it comes to cars, there are many different maladies that cause a warning light to appear on your dashboard.

  • Alternator Issues
  • Battery Problems
  • Drive Belt Problems (this would stop the Alternator)
  • Corroded Wires & Connections
  • Faulty Computer System

These problems can arise quickly and are rather common.
